BAK (Basis voor Actuele Kunst) organised 4 consecutive Saturday afternoons and evenings (25 November, 2, 9 and 16 December) in Utrecht for lectures, performances, screenings and reading groups to listen, watch and discuss about the rising phenomenon of art as a mode of knowledge production. I went to participate in the conversations and presentations on this spreading notion and mission of art as knowledge production and to follow how it is affecting how art is produced, supported and received today.
This topic of knowledge production in the arts is a relevant matter of concern for ALMOSTREAL given its attempt to set up a dynamic space of communication between artists and cultural (funding) institutions. That artists could learn from the funders ‘knowledge’ and correspondingly, the funder from the artist. One key question for ALMOSTREAL is, is how might artists engage in the present cultural, social and political conditions without having to compromise risk-taking possibilities needed to explore new terrains? Here are some further reflections.
