Bytes & Pieces is a series of 3 workshops developed by digital musician Tarek Atoui together with Takuro Mizuta Lippit from STEIM studios in Amsterdam that brings new technologies and art-making together.
Following the VidéoAvril festival in April 2007, the second stage of ALMOSTREAL will be continued through Bytes & Pieces workshops held in May 2008 in Beirut. Bytes & Pieces is a set of 3 interdisciplinary workshops for emerging Lebanese artists and electronic engineers to develop work and learn from one another. The focus of the workshops is for young artists to learn new skills in developing and using computer applications to explore new possibilites for aesthetic interactions between their work, it's audience and digital or real life environment.
The first workshop will involve visual-arts, graphic design and performings arts students in their final years of study from the Lebanese art acadmies. This workshop looks at how artists can put together multidisciplinary installations and performances by using or even developing from scratch new computer programmes and hardware.
The second workshop is for students in their last years of studies in electronics and computer engineering. The aim of this workshop is to get participants from the engineering world to discover and understand the new possibilities of computer engineering in the arts sphere and to open up links with artistic projects through using their knowledge and competences.
The third workshop will bring the two groups of artists and engineers together to share interests, know-hows and differing perspectives on using computational technologies in making artistic work. The aim of the final workshop is to invite collaboration between artists and engineers to conceive and work with one another on common projects.
