Re-granting is when a sum of money is granted to a particular artist or artistic organisation who then redistributes this money to other artists or organisations. This support type is considered problematic and unreliable by many funders since re-granting requires apriori a considerable trust between the funder and the funded. When re-granting is so to say ´granted´ by the funder, it is done on the basis of what the funder knows about the organisation and their critical position inside a certain particular social and cultural context. When this happens, re-granting is potentially the most powerful instrument of support. Although re-granting is still distributed as a grant it differs from commissioning as it is less contingent on a defined project proposal and strict requirements.
