Onderwerp: Re: it will be what we make it
Dear all,
thanks for the mails, sharing opinion and information and readings and for the weather reports. looking forward to meet you and to experiment the first changes in the space.
At this moment I think that all my concerns have been laid out somehow by the precedent mails. I’m very curious to hear more about the occupation-game-proposal from Pedro, and agree with him about his proposal concerning solitude. the reflection from Mark and Ana, the context of the project concerning the future of the space seems very relevant, as well as they concerns to doing a project versus running an institute’s space. I’m agree with doing and finishing the documentation process during the project, let’s talk further about it.
From my side, just to add that i’m interested in the notions of socialization and democratization of the space while we are there, also relating to some of the activities that alkantara does in the city. Curious about contacting the poetry rappers of the hood and about the radio project, live radio project, i will say. and very happy to cook with Nuno.
Hereby the link to Edward de Bono and his parallel thinking theories. While we were talking about group working sessions, this came to my mind as an example. it will be interesting to experiment it as a group training or it can trigger other ways to approach each other.

> We are having an incredibly beautiful aftersummer here in Lisbon. It is sunny and warm, but there is also a slight autumn freshness in the air. And it looks like it is going to continue like this well into next week. At least, that is what Yahoo Wheather says. Would be great! In the evening it does get chilly, though.

> We finished an international project less than two weeks ago, but are already working hard to prepare IWBWWMI and your arrivals in Lisbon. Here follows some information, partly in response to earlier mails by Bojana, Pedro and Mark and Ana.

> SPACE
> As we saw in our July meeting, the fact that we will be ‘warming up’ a new space for the arts in the centre of Lisbon, has inevitably become a central issue for the whole project. That makes a lot of sense. I have written a short text about the project for the local press that I send in annex. It makes this focus clear, without letting go of the other aspects of the project we have discussed.
>
> The space is basically in the same state as you found it in July, but with a couple of important differences:
> - although we haven’t been able to do real construction works, we have made repairs on the roofs, so as to inhibit (or at least reduce to an absolute minimum) infiltrations of water. As it hasn’t rained a drop in the past few weeks, we will only be sure when that happens.
> - the whole space has been thoroughly cleaned up: rubble and dust (as much as possible) have gone.
> - we have renewed the electricity for safety reasons and to create more potency.
> - there will be wireless internet.
> - on the first floor, there will be workspaces with tables and chairs, computer, printer, etc. It is recommended that you bring your laptop (or a friend’s), since we only have two or three computers on location
> - we have brought in quite a bit of technical equipment for sound, light and video
> - Carlos Bártolo, an interior designer, is creating a public space/bar/lounge, with furniture and stuff that was given to us or bought at a very low cost. This space is for us to use and re-arrange.
> - We will be able to cook and eat on location, if we feel like it.

> PUBLIC
> I am very much in favour to invite public. Weather we constantly keep the doors open, or only invite the public for certain events, I think we will have to decide together, when we are here. In any case, a basic structure for a bar/lounge is in place, including, yes Pedro, a draught beer machine, coffee, water, soft drinks, etc. and partly for free, so we can practice low prices. I may be difficult to open the bar every evening, but if we wnat to do some open events, no problem. I guess it is best to take a couple of days to think about this together.
>
> We have made a postcard (in annex) announcing the project to the public and asking them to register to receive information about specific events. So, there will be a core group of people that knows something is going on, but needs to be informed if we want them to come. This means, of course, a serious effort in publicity. The alkantara team is there to help with the press, but we can invent other ways too.

> COLLABORATION
> I agree with Bojana and Pedro, collaboration is not a topic, nor an imposition, but a potential. Of course, we jointly will run an artistic process for three weeks, so I imagine that there will be collaboration happening on various levels of intensity and density. I think it won’t be too difficult to set up flexible and efficient discussion formats and decision-making processes.
>
> DOCUMENTATION
> Documentation is important. We cannot leave this event undocumented, if only because there are some serious expectations on this level by the funding organisation ECF. Anyway, I also would very much like some documentation to happen. Since we didn’t get to a clear decision on this in July, we haven’t contracted anybody to do so.
> It probably is most interesting and realistic to hold on to an idea that was launched in July: to include documentation into the project proper and make sure that it is done AND completed during the event. We do and document at the same time. There will be two or three video camera’s available and a mac with editing software. I have the feeling that instant documentation would work best using the format of video and photography (as mark an ana propose), but writing could also have a place. There could be writing for the video, or interviews, or small screen plays. Or maybe we could produce a mixed media documentation? This is something that obviously needs to be decided on very soon in the project.

> PRACTICALITIES
> You will receive practical information about your arrival, lodging, first meeting, etc. by wednesday.
