In many of her projects, Jeanne finds ways to involve funding bodies more into artistic work so that funders can start to imagine how to host difference and the unexpected that is so inherent to artistic work. While Jeanne actively seeks a direct and sometimes confronting engagement with her funders, it seems that a striking majority of artists and organisations do not share her readiness to partake in a conversation with the ‘hand who feeds them’, chosing instead to maintain what seems to be a compulsory skeptical position.
Sitting at Igor's desk, Jeanne recalls two instances she encountered in ALMOSTREAL which made her realise how there is more often hostility than hospitality towards ALMOSTREAL and the ECF and its intention to engage with artists to better develop funding flexibility and sustainability. This hostility, or lack of trust is a sad loss for both parties, since it prevents any possibility for a common exchange and valuable learning experience on either the part of the artist or the funder from taking place.
